Pupil Premium and Sports Funding

What Schools Need to Publish Online

This requirement applies to all school types, including both maintained schools and academies.

If your school receives Pupil Premium funding, you must publish a strategy statement on your website by the 31st of December each year. It is mandatory to use the official Department for Education template for this statement, which can be found on the GOV.UK website.

Your statement itself must clearly explain two key things:

  • How the Pupil Premium funding is being spent.

  • The educational outcomes being achieved for your disadvantaged pupils as a result of this spending.

While the DfE recommends planning your spending over three years, you still must update the statement annually. This update should show your spending activity for the current academic year and detail the impact of the premium in the previous academic year.

PE and Sport Premium

This funding is awarded at the primary level, so the following requirements apply to all maintained primary schools and primary academies.

By the 31st of July each year, you must publish a report detailing your PE and Sport Premium funding. This report must include:

  • The total amount of premium funding you received.

  • A full and clear breakdown of how the funding has been spent, or how you intend to spend it.

  • Details of the impact the school has seen on pupils' participation and attainment in PE and sport.

  • An explanation of how these improvements will be sustained in the future.

Swimming and Water Safety Data

In addition to the PE and Sport Premium report, primary schools have a specific duty to report on swimming proficiency.

Also by the 31st of July, you must publish the percentage of your Year 6 pupils who have met the national curriculum requirement to:

  • Swim competently, confidently, and proficiently over at least 25 metres.

  • Use a range of strokes effectively.

  • Perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
